China-Cambodia Discuss Possibility of Light Rail from New Siem Reap Airport

PHNOM PENH: The Inter-Ministerial Commission held its first meeting with China Metro Group to promote the study of a light rail development project connecting the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport to Siem Reap city.

First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Commission, Sun Chanthol, led the committee to review and promote the project on December 26.

The meeting’s stakeholders discussed the light rail project in accordance with the recommendations of Prime Minister to grow Cambodia’s tourism and transportation services while avoiding traffic congestion from the new airport to Siem Reap City center. They also discussed the importance of avoiding any disturbance of the Angkor archeological site and the surrounding conservation area with the help of the APSARA Authority.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of China Metro Group, Li Kuo, informed the Prime Minister about the company's additional plans to study the development of light rail between the two new airports in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh at the Belt and Road Initiative Summit in Beijing on October 17. He added that the company will also study various possibilities to alleviate traffic congestion in Cambodia.
